Bonne moisson is French for “good harvest.” I chose this as the title for this smoothie recipe because I used quite a few different fruits, which harmonized to create a sweet, complicated taste. It brings to my mind’s eye the image of some children in a cozy home in the farmland of France, tasting the fruits of the first harvest from a handmade basket as la mere begins to make her homestyle fruit preserves.
Another reason I gave this smoothie a French name is because it features some pear jam I recently bought which is apparently a product of France. I didn’t even know that when I bought it, though the labeling does state that it is made using an old French recipe. It has no cane sugar and only uses natural sweeteners, which is good to know.
I’ve been having a lot of chocolatey smoothies lately, so for this one I decided to try to make it chocolate-free, just to switch things up. (Not that chocolate is all bad, since dark chocolate apparently has antioxidants like those in Green Tea. There’s some more information on healthy chocolate in my post about the perfect chocolate bar smoothie.) Anyway, I had no regrets regarding the absence of chocolate once I took the first sip of this smoothie. It was tart and sweet in perfect proportion, a flavorful celebration of all the fruits of the harvest. Someday, I think I’d like to go live in the country, and maybe actually grow my own food, but for now I can settle for just buying at the grocery store and dreaming of a life in the countryside of France…
Bonne Moisson (Good Harvest) Smoothie
- 1 banana
- 4-6 fresh strawberries
- about 2/3 of a Granny Smith apple
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 pineapple yogurt (I used a Lucerne brand Greek yogurt)
- 1 tbsp pear jam (I used the St. Dalfour pear jam previously described)
- 5-6 ice cubes
Put all ingredients in blender. For the strawberries, chop off the leaves at the top of each one and cut them in half for easier blending. For the apple, cut it into about 1/2 inch by 1/4 inch cubes before placing in blender. I always break the banana into about three pieces as well. Once all ingredients are in the blender, you may need to use a knife to sort of mash them down a little bit, to bring them closer to the blades. When ready, blend for a couple minutes or until all ingredients are chopped and mixed together as much as possible for that smooth, thick texture.
Pour into a tall glass and savor the healthful goodness!
